Art with purpose

When I started this project, I just wanted to do something cute that blended my love for nature, particularly the unique realm of Appalachia, with my passion. As with all my endeavors, I was immediately distracted by funnels of information. I discovered amazing adaptations, incredible design, and unmatched beauty, as well as that ever lingering fear that it could all slip away if we don’t carefully guard our world.

It always starts simple enough. One sister-in-law loves butterflies, so I start the whole project with that - which butterfly? Well, there’s 175 of them, so I went for what seemed the most striking but most common out here. One sister-in-law tells me The Great Smoky Mountains are the salamander capital of the world, and having always been fascinated by the magnificence of the Hellbender, I had to include that too. My own favorite flower? Mountain Laurels - digging deeper taught me about our awesome local bees and bunnies, and the struggles they’re undergoing. Flying squirrels, cute, Fraser Fir, unique, Black Bears, a no brainer - all of these, inextricably linked in a complex web that I understood had to be there on a surface level, but had never dug into.

I hope I can pass some of this knowledge - as well as the love and protectiveness it inspired in me - onto you through these prints. If you’re interested in holding onto a piece of Appalachia in your home, office, or business, ask me through my contact form.
